Wellness Series: Natural Remedies 101

Natural Remedies
We've all heard the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away", but what other natural remedies can also keep the doctor away? Keep reading to find out my favorite natural remedies! Personally I trust these much more than medications or traditional medicine and I've tried just about all of these on the list and I've tried my best to include information from both alternative health and wellness sites and more traditional such as Web MD.  Always consult your doctor. Remember before we had medicine, we had food!

Lemons 
 Alkaline restores body's pH, Vitamin C, Digestion, Detox Liver, Dissolve gallstones, kidney stones, antibacterial, anti-cancer
Cherries
Pain reliever to replace ibuprofen especially for arthritis and gout, reduces inflammation to help treat migraines (eat 20 per day, dark cherries), anti-cancer, sleep 
Coffee
Constricts blood vessels which can reduce pain during a headache or migraine 
(one of my top go-tos for a migraine)
Honey
Local honey can help with allergies, better athletic performance, improves sleep
Neem Oil
Skin irritations and skin conditions, plaque removal, ulcers, upset stomach, lice, fungal infections, arthritis, 
*not for children, pregnant women, auto immune diseases, diabetes, those trying to get pregnant*
Tahini (from sesame seeds)
Magnesium to help with headaches, liver detoxification, prevent anemia, digestion, weight loss
Ginger
Gastrointestinal distress, anti-inflammatory, nausea, protection against colorectal cancer, anti-tumor effects on ovarian cancer cells, immune boosting 
Bee Pollen
Aids with allergies (buy local pollen), skin softening for diaper rash or eczema, 
diet: contains proteins and is rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals
*not for pregnant or breastfeeding women or those with severe pollen allergies (I took some and was fine and I'm allergic to grass, trees and weeds), not for those taking blood thinners*

Papaya 
Anti-cancer (cervical, possibly others), eyesight/prevent blindness, healthy skin, remedy for acne

Lima Beans
Anti-breast cancer, lowers cholesterol, lower heart attack risk, stabilize blood sugar, energy

Pumpkin Seeds
Migraines, heart health, protect against osteoporosis, reduce inflammation for arthritis

Mint Leaves 
Bad breath, digestion/diuretic, anti-cancer, asthma, allergies

Nuts
PMS, cramps, stress reduction, heart health, weight loss, brain health
Tip: your nuts should have only 1 ingredient, be sure to check the ingredient and look for raw and unsalted

Tumeric 
Anti-inflammatory for colon, menstrual cramps, reduce blood sugar, helps prevent Alzheimer's, heal wounds, cancer fighter
Tip: try this in your eggs!

Cinnamon 
Bad breath, increase metabolism, fights bacteria, reduces inflammation, lower cholesterol, anti-infection, reduce arthritis pain, menstrual pain, promise for various neuro-degenerative disease
Psyllium Husk 
Cleanse colon, improve digestion & circulation, weight loss, irritable bowel syndrome, reduce cholesterol

Sombra
Pain Reliever, increases blood flow

Epson Salts 
Sore muscles/splinters, bug bites, exfoliate skin, hair voluminizer, gardening, chronic fatigue

Tips:
The form to buy these in in the cleanest most raw and natural form. Stay away from extra processing, added ingredients like salt and sugar. Check the ingredients list and look for the words "raw". Use the application called Fooducate on your smart phone to make sure you're making the best choice when buying food. For fruits, try buying them frozen for optimal taste and freshness and a cheaper price. For oils and supplements, check country of origin and go to a health food store you trust and develop a rapport with the owner/employees-they are an excellent source of information. Good thing is that a lot of these products you probably already have in your cabinets and they're really not that hard to start incorporating more frequently into your daily life.
