How to Combat Body Acne

In the past 3 months, I've undergone more stress than I would wish on anyone.  My husband and I moved 26 hours away from anyone we know,  and I found out I was pregnant with our first child.  Between mood swings and morning sickness, we packed and unpacked a moving van and drove for 3 straight days across the country, with our dog sitting between us.  Now that we're in our new place, my husband is gone on business for 2-3 weeks out of every month, leaving me alone in a town where I know nobody.  In this time, I have experienced hormones and stress taking a mad toll on my body.  Pregnancy glow?  Please!  More like pregnancy cystic acne all over my body.

If you experience pimples due to hormones and stress, read on:

How to Combat Body Acne
- I always tend to break out where my bra straps lie.  Wash your bra every 2-3 wears.  If it's hard because you don't have a washer or dryer, wash them in the sink with laundry detergent or a mild soap like Dr. Bronner's.  They will drip dry within 24 hours.

- Do you sleep in a sports bra?  Keep at least 2 sports bras around- one for the gym or outdoor activities that require extra support for "the girls" and one to sleep in.  If you sweat when you sleep, I would wash this one every couple days too, otherwise you might get by with a week of wear.

- Try switching from chemical laden body washes and scrubs to natural.  If you can't pronounce any of the ingredients in your body wash, it's likely it could be aggravating any acne problems you have.  There are great products at every price point.  We love Indie Lee's body scrub.

- Ditch the loofah or any other shower scrubbers that hang in your shower all day.  They are loaded with bacteria and old coagulated product.  Take a look inside your loofah sometime and I bet you will see mold in there.  I always rinsed mine out after my shower until only clear water would go through- no suds- but even doing that I found mold on mine and promptly tossed it!

- If you have bacne (acne on your back) make sure you thoroughly wash all the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair and let it rinse out while you're facing the shower nozzle with your head down in front.  It's easy to let the suds fall down your back and your hair might be in the way of them rinsing off your skin.

- If you have someone in your life that you're very close to like a husband, boyfriend, or bestie, see if they'll scan your back from time to time.  When my husband has bad acne on his back, I try to get it for him and apply some spot healing cream, then he gets me back.  It sounds super gross because it is.  But you'd be surprised how desperate some people are to get a zit off a hard to reach spot, and they will be grateful enough to pop yours too!

- If you go to the gym or get sweaty, try to keep a towel handy to dry off afterwards.  If you soak your bra with sweat, it needs to be changed pronto!  Keeping dry under your clothes helps with body acne big time.

** Never, ever, ever go tanning!  It might seem like it dries out your skin just enough to clear up your skin but it is sooooo bad for you!  A friend of a friend once told me not to be afraid of tanning- her doctor told her she could go up to twice a week to dry out acne without having to fear skin cancer.  If my doc told me that, they'd be fired!  It's truly not worth the negative side effects which include wrinkles, sun spots, painful sunburn, and melanoma.
