Guest Blog: Coral Lip Colors For Spring!

I am a magazine junkie and my new obsession is Ladies Home Journal. They just did a redesign and I love it! It's very focused on reader contributions which is an awesome selling point in a world where print media is losing to digital media. I highly recommend picking up a copy.

Anyway, this month's beauty section inspired me to experiment with a hot new trend for spring: Coral lips!

I've always loved this look, but I realized I don't wear it often, which is definitely about to change. The great thing about coral as a lip color is that it's a really saturated, bright color that doesn't look quite as harsh as red, but is a little more unique than pink. You can get away with this color all day long, and just change up your eye makeup for day or evening.

Some people are afraid of coral, since the orange-y hues can clash with certain skin tones. But I promise you, you CAN find a coral that works for you, it just may take a little digging. You may find you like a sheer coral gloss or a color that is closer to hot pink with a little orange undertone.

Here are a few products I have in various shades of coral. Some are new, some I've had for a while, so I'm not entirely sure if the specific colors are still available. I think I've covered a good range of product types and price points.

Left to Right:
  • Avon Ultra Color Rich Lipstick in "Chutney" ($7, $3.99 on sale)
  • Sonia Kashuk Luxury Lip Color in "Coraline" ($8.99, Target)
  • Mirabella Lip Definer in "Moxie" ($20, mirabellabeauty.com. This one is close to my heart, I wore this on my wedding day!)
  • Avon Glazewear liquid lip color in "Peach Fizz" ($6, $2.49 on sale)
  • L'Oreal Infallible Plumping Lipgloss in "Plumped Coral" ($8.49, Target)
  • Covergirl Shineblast Lipgloss in "Fire" ($7.44, Target)

Here I am wearing CG Shineblast in "Fire." The color is very subtle and sheer, but you can bump up the color with a few coats of gloss.

Here is the Sonia Kashuk lipstick on me. A fun, matte look.

I added the gloss over the lipstick for my favorite look! I am totally wearing this out tonight!

You can create a look around your coral lip with neutral tones or play with more color, just keep it simple. With my favorite look above, I swept a soft lavender shade on my lids. The colors play well off each other without looking clownish.

My total look in this pic is:

-Clinique Super City Block SPF 40

-Clinique All About Eyes concealer

-Clnique Stay Matte powder

-the Balm Hot Mama blush (just a bit)

-Clinique Touch Base in Canvas Light (lid to brow)

-Clinque eye shadow in Twilight Mauve (whole lid)

-L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara

-Sonia Kashuk Luxury Lip Color in Coraline

-Covergirl Shineblast Lipgloss in Fire

This was just for out and about on a Saturday afternoon. For tonight, I will probably wear foundation, add eyeliner, and mix the eye shadow with a little Vaseline for shine.

I really hope everyone tires out a coral lip. It's really fun, gorgeous, and unique, since many women shy away from it.

Yours in beauty and sassy coral lips,

Lauren
